Gecko Villa offers the visitor the opportunity to escape from the beaten toursit path and to experience life amongst the small villages of the rural Northeast. The property is located near Udon Thani: from here, free transfers are offered.
The Thai family that runs the property offers guests the opportunity to simply relax and unwind at this private retreat, or to go local and immerse themselves in the indigenous ways of life. The choice is left to the guest, and most will want to spend some time lazing at this private country getaway, before venturing out into the surroundings to live Thai country life at first hand.
The owners will be happy to accompany you to places of natural beauty and hidden points of interest. Do venture out to discover the forest temples, local markets, small villages with their old wooden houses, Ban Chiang's museum and the picturesque local lakes, enjoy a traditional Thai massage or simply take the house's bicycles out for a ride into the heart of the countryside...
The home in fact reflects the layout of a typical Thai house, being comprised of several individual buildings raised above the ground and set around a central garden, linked with wooden decks. It offers a large, T-shaped private swimming pool with sun loungers, which looks out over extensive meadowlands and grazing pastures, rice paddies, orchards and plantations. An outside table and chairs offer guests the possibility of lunching or dining in the fresh air.
The house offers 3 bedrooms, each with hardwood floors and a king-sized teak bed. The main bedroom is air-conditioned and has an en-suite bathroom that in turn leads out to a private outdoor garden shower. the second air-conditioned bedroom enjoys views over the garden and pool, and shares an en-suite bathroom with the third, fan-cooled bedroom.
A spacious living room offers both sofas and armchairs and alternatively futons for those who prefer to stretch out in front of the television or simply to indulge in a midday snooze. A sound system, DVD player, satellite television and DVD film library are complemented by the availability of a notebook computer with wireless internet connectivity for those needing to check their emails. A large dining table hewn out of old wood allows guests to dine indoors should they prefer.
Gecko Villa has a large Western kitchen equipped with all necessary items - a large double-door refrigerator and freezer, plates and cutlery, microwave, coffee pots, cooking utensils, glasses and so forth. the house also has an open air Thai kitchen. However, as all holidays at Gecko Villa are fully catered, with delicious Thai and Isaan meals concocted for you freshly each day, your use of the kitchens will probably be limited to helping yourself to a chilled beer or fruit juice!
A maid service and laundry are also provided free of charge, as are Thai cooking lessons for those wanting to learn some of the secrets of this fascinating cuisine. Noted northeastern dishes include green papaya salad, barbecued chicken, spicy fresh salads, sticky rice and numerous meat, vegetable and fish dishes. Whilst dazzling in both flavours and texture, they are not complicated to master and will always surprise your friends as you present something other than standard Thai dishes.
Gecko Villa supports responsible travel and is involved in reforestation projects, rainwater harvesting and recycling. All proceeds form your stay at the house will be retained by the immediate local community. Nearest airport: Udon Thani
