The South of Thailand stretches down towards Malaysia, and is renowned for its tropical beaches, verdant islands, excellent diving waters, dense rubber plantations and some startlingly spicy indigenous dishes.
The West coast on the Andaman Sea is home to the famous islands of Phuket and Phi Phi, to Khao Lak, Krabi and Phang Nga, with its strange and impressive limestone karsts.
Off the East coast lie the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, where, until tourism became a major focus, coconuts and fishing were the mainstay of these island communities.
Further south is the town of Hat Yai, which is popular with Malaysian tourists. The Deep South, home to Songkhla, Yala and Pattani, is probably best avoided by the casual holidaymaker, as frequent disruptions are caused by the insurgency there.
Home Cooking in the South A quick glance at the map will help underline why seafood and coconut milk feature prominently in Southern Thai food, and may also explain why the chili (originally an import into Thailand) is used so generously here in searing dishes such as "gaeng liang" or "gaeng tai pla". The thick, sweet peanut based Massaman curry also evokes an Indian influence. When in season, southerners enjoy the bitter tasting green sataw bean, but this passions is often not adopted by visitors... |
