    North East Thailand is referred to as "Isaan", and the locals predominantly use a dialect that is much more aligned with  Lao rather than akin to central  Thai.

     

    The Northeast has been relatively untouched by tourism, and as such offers the adventurous traveller the opportunity to witness lifestyles that have remained largely unchanged, in a region know for the warm hospitality and fun-loving nature of its people.

     

    The region is primarily agricultural, with a few large cities and vast expanses of land dedicated to growing rice, sugarcane, cassava, eucalyptus, rubber trees and fruit and vegetables. The water buffalo remains a common sight.

     

    Home Cooking in the Northeast

    The cuisine of Northeast Thailand is renowned throughout the kingdom for its spiciness, and for its artistry in combining simple fresh ingredients to wonderful effect. Local dishes include fresh green papaya salad, charcoal barbecued marinated chicken, spicy beef salads and the infamous "Crying Tiger Beef". Fresh fish is also consumed as a core part of the diet, together with sticky rice.
