Northern Thailand is reputed for its mountains and tribal villages, and its often cooler temperature. The region is home to the historical university city of Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, and the once quiet but now crowded little town of Pai. Other towns include Lampang, the historical town of Sukhothai, the former communist stronghold of Nan, and the town of Phitsanuloke, famous for its long tail boat races.
Many Thais travel to the North in the cool season (around December) to enjoy numerous festivals and the unusual cold weather.
Trekking is a popular activity in the region, as are elephant rides and escapes into the mountains to visit waterfalls and places of natural beauty.
Northern Thai Home Cooking Northern Thai food often features glutionous rice with a variety of meat curries such as "gaeng hang lay" and "gaeng kae", chilli paste dips such as "nam prik noom", "nam prik daeng", and "nam prik ong"; and a particular type of sausage called "sai oua". The dish shown above is "Khao Soi", a chicken curry with noodles in a thick spicy broth, topped with crunchy fried noodles and served wth red onions, preserved cabbage and chilli paste and a wedge of lime. Its roots can be traced back to Burma and China. Ingredients commonly found elsewhere in Thailand, such as coconut milk and seafood, are not indigenous to the region. |
