The East Coast is readily accessible from Bangkok, and as such is often a sought-after destination for Bangkokians escaping from the city at weekends and on public holidays.
Bang Saen is located just before Pattaya and appeals mainly to a Thai market, whilst Rayong is reached by a slightly longer drive although on good roads. Koh Samet also remains a popular destination for Thai and foreign holidaymakers alike, and manages to exude an island resort atmosphere within a relatively short distance from the capital. Chantaburi and Koh Chang also see growing numbers of visitors.
The seaside resort of Pattaya remains popular with numerous tourists, and appeals to those looking for boisterous nightlife and Western facilities, although its attempts to change its image to appeal to families cannot camouflage its more seedy reputation. A large number of Westerners call this city home.
